Welcome to the Rochelle Intermodal website, showcasing my old N scale layout. This layout was loosely based on Rochelle, Illinois, and had an intermodal facility (based on Global III) and industrial switching areas (based on Caron Road, Rochelle, IL.). This website is a place to show you my old Rochelle Intermodal N scale layout, with photos and videos. This website is no longer being updated.

Work progresses on tunnel

I’ve been doing some work on the tunnel.  Started off with a wooden framework, then covered that with cardboard webbing and finally Woodland Scenics plaster cloth.

I’ve added retaining walls to the tunnel mouth near the rear of the intermodal yard and a culvert under the track at the front of the yard.

This week I will add some rock faces for interest and the tunnel interior where it can be seen through the tunnel mouths.  I have added the trackbed above the tunnel for the track that leads to the new staging yard behind & above the intermodal yard and will be adding that track once I have coloured the plaster & rock faces with Woodland Scenics colour pigments.

I have also purchased a new toy for the layout…a CMX Track Cleaner!  I’ve given it a few runs around the layout on both main tracks and I am very impressed so far. It does need two locos to pull it though…pretty hefty piece of equipment!

Layout update – tunnel, loco facility trackwork

December 7th, 2014

Quite a productive weekend.  I have added new track across a few of the board joins to make it more reliable – still a few to do, but will result in a lot fewer problems as there will be no large gaps in the track anymore.

I also added the first tunnel supports, ready for the framework.  I’ll be using the tried & trusted method of cardboard strips and plaster cloth to cover the tunnel.

Also added was the first of the boards for the new classification yard and loco facility.  Still a short board to add, then I will be starting work on the staging yard boards – these I will be working on off the layout due to their inaccessibility once in place.

New video tour…with a twist!

December 6th, 2014

Here is a short layout tour of my Rochelle Intermodal N scale layout.  I was testing a German Deutsche Bahn locomotive for a fellow Seaboard Southern Model Club member.  Not often you will see a non-American loco on the layout, but it was a good chance to test the trackwork and block detection.

Don’t worry…the next video tour will be a ‘proper’ locomotive!
