New track plan & layout page updated
Peter Borcherds December 3rd, 2014
Just a quick update to say I’ve updated the layout page with the latest layout information, as well as the latest trackplan.
Welcome to the Rochelle Intermodal website, showcasing my old N scale layout. This layout was loosely based on Rochelle, Illinois, and had an intermodal facility (based on Global III) and industrial switching areas (based on Caron Road, Rochelle, IL.). This website is a place to show you my old Rochelle Intermodal N scale layout, with photos and videos. This website is no longer being updated.
My new layout, BNSF Chicago Sub N Scale can be found on the following website: https://chicagosubnscale.com

Well, quite a productive two weeks – Rochelle Intermodal train room now has surround sound, thanks to a surround sound system that has been in a loft for years! So now I can listen to decent tunes while working on the layout…as well as watch train DVD’s in full surround sound glory!
This weekend I also added a test track, with HO and N track, as well as an N scale rolling road, so I can program my locos easier while using DecoderPro and also run in locos while the layout is being worked on. I still need to paint the wood and hide the wiring, but it is at least all working. I have a Sprog II connected to the two test tracks, and the rolling road is connected to a Digitrax Zephyr.
In the coming weeks I’ll be making some adjustments to the track where the boards join – I’ll be adding 6 inches of track across the joins as I’ve been having a few issues with gaps and derailments. As the layout is not portable anymore, I can now do this. I’ll also be planning the track work for the new staging and classification yards as well as the loco depot, so keep an eye out for those track plans soon!

Work has been progressing well on Rochelle Intermodal over the past week. I’ve completed all the trackwork on the new flyover section, including laying the single-slip and left-hand turnout (they still need to be hooked up to point motors…somehow!).
I also had to re-lay a section of track on the Caron loop board as the S-bend was too tight for my new Trinity Reefers from BLMA and ExactRail. Now they run round perfectly!
Still a few niggly bits of trackwork to sort out, mainly the rails at the board ends, some of which need slight alignment adjustment as there are still occasional derailments.
Here are a couple of photos showing the new flyover and replacement track:
I’ll post some more photos later this week as I do more work on the layout. My next step is to airbrush the trackwork with Testors Concrete, then paint the rails ready for ballasting.
