First light installed!

April 1st, 2013

A very productive long weekend.  I finished installing the plywood walls (just the pillars to do now) and have almost finished the roof woodwork – I sort of miscalculated the wood needed and am short of a few lengths!  Plus I somehow forgot to order the last few insulation boards…so I couldn’t finish insulating the ceiling!  Doh!  But at least the framework is in place and ready for insulating.

But the most exciting bit is that I installed plasterboard on the ceiling in 2 places – and installed the first fluorescent light fitting!  Next weekend I will get the rest of the ceiling insulated and then my good friend Graham from my railroad club is coming next Wednesday to help me with the rest of the ceiling – a lot easier with two people!

So, here are photos part of the ceiling and of the new light fitting – the end is truly in sight!

The end is in sight…!

March 26th, 2013

The end of what, you ask?  The railroad room!

Last weekend I made good progress on the ceiling – the sections where the lighting will go are all insulated and ready for the plasterboard, which arrived this morning.  This weekend will be a manic 4 days of getting the whole ceiling done as well as the last few plywood wall panels.   My wife, Lucy, will be filling all the screw holes in the plywood, then putting the first coat of paint on.  Hopefully I will be able to get the electrician over in the next few weeks to finish connecting everything, then finally there will be light (and power)!

My next bit is to lay the floorboards – well, try to and see if they will work – they are left over from the house after a flood we had last year.  The lounge floor was replaced and those boards are now stacked in the garage – undamaged, luckily. Our flooring guy suggested I use them in the garage, which I think is a brilliant idea.  So, let’s hope they fit together again!

So, here are two photos showing the current progress – I’ll hopefully have photos of a finished ceiling by the end of the Easter weekend!

Plywood walls progress

December 14th, 2012

The left hand wall of the garage is almost done – I had some time last weekend to do some work and managed to do most of the left hand wall.  Just need to buy some more plywood then I can carry on with the rest – if the rain goes away that is!!  You will see I have left the brick pillars uncovered.  The problem is that they are not straight – some lean backwards, some lean forwards, so was not viable to plywood straight across them – I would have had to bring the stud walls forward quite a bit which was not viable due to where the main beams were, and would have meant I would lose a lot more space from the width of the garage.  So I am going to have to box in the pillars – a little bit more work, but at least I will have straight walls!

I won’t be able to do any work this weekend, but I am taking time off between Christmas and New Year, so aim to finish everything then and I will then be able to book the electrician in for the New Year to come do the second fix.

Here is the latest photo of the walls:

Here is the start of the ceiling studwork and the insulation – I’m doing this to leave the beams exposed – will be a nice effect and also means the strip lighting will be recessed meaning more headspace – if I had just put ceiling board across the beams the striplighting would have been too low.
